Studies of the topology of networks have revealed that much is shared between complex systems in diverse contexts. The focus of our work is on the relationship between structure, dynamics and function of complex systems. This work addresses the role of modularity, connectivity distributions and dynamic response. The universal modularity of complex systems has been recognized since at least the work of Herbert Simon decades ago. The more recent recognition that many complex systems have sparse networks with small-world and scale-free properties provides additional clues to our understanding of these systems.
